The Upfront season is here. As always, DirayTV is looking forward to seeing what’s in store for the upcoming year. What is an Upfront? As its name suggests, the main purpose is to allow advertisers and agencies to buy TV air time “up front” before the television season begins in the fall.
Upfronts are presentations usually put on by executives at the television networks and are attended by the press, major advertisers and media agencies. Networks announce their fall schedules and feature the new shows. Upfronts are supposed to be for the benefit of the advertisers, but it’s also a time for the press and critics to analyze the new lineups. What’s really going to be a hit is anyone’s guess and we won’t know for sure until the shows air in the fall.
Along with recaps, rating stats and new programming, Upfronts can be a blast too. Many networks go all out with their presentations which can include their TV Stars, the hottest singers or bands, who often mingle with the crowds. These events are informative and exciting… you never know what stars you will see!
2012 is looking to be the year that presentations are also focusing on the network’s TV counterpart, their online presence. Web and on-demand content is a growing segment and it will be interesting to see how these online video ad spends are addressed. As the cable networks grow, their challenge is to continue carving out their niche and providing lucrative programming along with a strong online presence. Analysts also predict that Upfront ad spending will rise, but some networks will hold back inventory.
